The theme for Archifest 2019 is Craft. More
Throughout the ages, architecture has been synonymous with craftsmanship. Architects work as artisans in the crafting of space and form, developing deep understandings of materiality and technique to reflect the genius loci of a place. The SIA Conference wishes to engage the fraternity, academics, agencies and public alike to join us in a richer understanding of craft.
Today, this discourse is especially relevant as the landscape of practice and construction is rapidly evolving. If the broadest definition of craft is about precision that demands laborious attention and skilled handwork, where would we fit notions of craft within the modern reality of fast-paced, mass-produced and rapidly consumed architectural work?
Digital technology, fabrication and open-source templates challenge conventional artisan modes of production, but also democratize design by expanding access to an otherwise exclusive field.
Craftsmen in this era require different skills, where computational design, digital fabrication and advanced geometry specialisations are paramount in the crafting of architecture. The shift in perception begs the question, is craft digital today?
This conference invites practitioners and leaders who practice their craft using analogue and digital methods to share their thoughts.A diverse and engaging discourse is expected to shed light on the current state of craft as practiced by the architecture community.
