Thomas Kong studied architecture at the National University of Singapore and Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is also the Principal of Studio Chronotope – a research-based practice focusing on social and cultural concerns in design. Besides his independent practice, Kong is also a founding partner of the Crisis Design Network (CDN) with Japanese architect Kenta Kishi. CDN is a project funded by the Toyota Foundation that seeks to uncover and address latent, diverse forms of crisis in Asian cities through the promotion of civic participations in design events, workshops and symposiums. He has been a studio critic at institutions around the world, and has spoken at conferences and participated in design forums on topics related to contemporary issues in design. Thomas Kong was recently awarded the third Jaap Bakema Fellowship by the Netherlands Architecture Institute for his traveling project “ZERO”.
