It is neither the Urban nor the Rural, it is both. New architecture cannot come out of old planning! Cities of Asia, behold the countryside, and imagine the infinite possibilities. See one space, not two.
– Tay Kheng Soon, from his blog on Rubanisation

To be conducted by practising architect and adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore’s School of Architecture, Tay Kheng Soon, the Rubanisation Workshop will begin with a briefing on the concept of Rubanisation. The idea of mixing the rural with the urban offers the possibility of a shift from the old industrial economy to a new economy that offers a new creative work/life balance. Workshop participants will be encouraged to imaginatively address the design of the “spatialand” using as many local materials as possible, such as bamboo, rammed earth and earth bricks, stones, thatch, woven bamboo, small brushwood timber, recycled materials, plastic, tyres, bottles, tin cans, etc. Participants are to form teams and present their work in the form of freehand drawings and models to the public and the press.

Invitations will be extended to embassy representatives from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam; as well ASEAN secretariat representatives.

This is a 2 day workshop and participants are required to attend both days.
