The AA (Architectural Association) Singapore Workshop is a 10-day event that provides participants with a taste of the AA’s design pedagogy. The program which started as a pilot visiting schools program by the AA in 2006 has since inspired similar visiting programs in other cities. Conducted by Nathalie Rozencwajg and Michel da Costa Gonçalves – who are both tutors at the AA and founders of rare architecture – and sponsored by Singapore Polytechnic and Design Singapore and supported by URA’s A+UDE’s program; the workshop proposes a series of study cycles, which has taken participants through explorations of component-based design (Breeding Design- 2006) to reflections on vertical growth (Vertical Strategies for Urban Living – 2007, 2008) and finally leading onto this year’s strategic agenda on Designed Geographies.

Through developing cross-referenced layers of urban conditions to produce ramified readings of the city, the workshops investigated experimental ways of observing the city, informed by an introduction to contemporary methods of physical and digital mapping, modelling and advanced design processes and research. Each group approached the shared agenda from different perspectives, using different techniques, to give a broad introduction to creative design processes, critical forms of thinking and urban research. In essence, the workshop was tailored to provide innovative and unexpected ways in considering and projecting further urban development as well as an insight into the school’s culture of design and debate.

The retrospective exhibition at SIA features works from the four years of this event exhibiting models and video presentations. It will run from the 19 – 30 October 2009 at the SIA Theatrette.
