Join Sri Lankan architect C. Anjalendran and author David Robson for the launch of the book Anjalendran: Architect of Sri Lanka.

Over the past two decades, Anjalendran has established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s leading architects. His buildings have a simple directness and although totally modern in spirit, they acknowledge the rich traditions of Sri Lanka. Anjalendran’s architecture is about using the simplest of materials to create magic, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the series of projects that he has built at rock-bottom cost for SOS Children’s Villages.

As one architect was heard to remark during a visit to the SOS Children’s Village located in Galle: “Why can’t the rest of Sri Lanka be like this?”

Anjalendran has worked from home during the past twenty-five years, never employing more than four student assistants at any one time. He has no office, no secretary, no car, no mobile phone, no bank account, and has never signed a contract with either a client or a builder.

Author David Robson is well known as the author of a comprehensive monograph on the architect Geoffrey Bawa, a book that draws heavily on Anjalendran’s archives and reminiscences. Robson has written at length about the development of Sri Lankan architecture since independence.
