For ArchiFest ’09, the Lighting Detectives will observe and question Singapore’s waterfront lighting. How does waterfront lighting contribute to creating a space for a pleasant evening stroll along the river? What attracts us towards the waterfront, and how can light help to enhance this atmosphere? Glare, reflections of light on the water, and the intertwining of light and shadow with the stillness of water are some of the aspects this exploration will be seeking. The event will be a combination of a talk on the subject followed by a boat tour along the Singapore River to observe, contemplate, and marvel at the lighting environment when seen from the water.

Originally hailing from Tokyo, the Lighting Detectives is a non-profit group engaged in observing and recording the international nightscape. The group was established in 1990 by Kaoru Mende, the principal of Lighting Planners Associates – a lighting design firm. Its vision is to increase awareness about “lighting cultures” through practical methods and fieldwork. The group regularly goes out into urban lighting environments to observe light, rather than relying on theories. Though the group began with a simple question about the present status of our cities and environment at night, the Lighting Detectives have branched out into many activities – organising workshops, forums, exhibitions, and interactions with various sections of society in developing an understanding of lighting cultures and how they affect us all.

The Lighting Detectives follow five rules:

  1. Get angry with surrounding light pollution
  2. Undertake deep and accurate observation of light on site
  3. Do be impressed with artistic lighting
  4. Calmly detect inspiring lighting designs
  5. Continuously accumulate experiences in lighting

Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) is a group of specialist engineers and designers who contribute to both architectural and luminous culture through the creation of a superb luminous environment. It was established by the internationally renowned lighting designer Kaoru Mende in 1990 in Tokyo, and its Singapore office was incorporated in 2000.
