Architects and urban planners are invited to share their perspectives on the places that best depict the notion of HAPPY CITIES, and share how and why these places have influenced their work. They will question how their creative perspectives and analyses of the topic can turn them into active contributors to this state of well-being.

Regional Showcase: Regional Architecture Institutes Exhibition

The Architect Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) is an organisation of seventeen National Institutes of Architects from the Asian region; it serves as a professional platform for Asian architects aiming to foster relations and regional programmes between its member countries. Its Council, composed of the Presidents of the respective national institutes, deliberates and gives collective directions to matters affecting the architectural profession in Asia.

For several decades, ARCASIA has worked to strengthen intellectual, artistic, educational and scientific ties between architects in the region, and actively promoted the recognition of the architect’s role in society.

ArchiFest’10 showcases ARCASIA’s projects from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Pakistan; highlighting, among other topics, sustainable urban living spaces and projects rooted in vernacular architecture.

3rd SIA-NParks Skyrise Greenery Awards 2010

Green roofs, vertical greenery and gardens in the sky – skyrise greenery is greenery integrated into built-forms in the city. It has increasingly become an important component of sustainable urban development in the 21st century.

National Parks Board and Singapore Institute of Architects are excited to announce the Skyrise Greenery Awards 2010. Now into its third year, the Awards aim to promote and recognise the greening of high-rise developments through the joint efforts of owners/developers, architects, landscape architects/designers and landscape contract managers. The Skyrise Greenery Awards recognise excellence in two categories:
- Completed Projects
- Ideas/Unbuilt Works

Award winners will be announced on 1 November 2010 at the International Skyrise Greenery Conference 2010

10th SIA Architectural Design Awards 2010

The aim of Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) Architectural Design Awards is to recognise the efforts of SIA members in their pursuit of architectural excellence and innovative architectural solutions. It also aims to increase the appreciation and patronage of good architectural design from both within and without the construction industry.

Beyond fulfilling functional requirements, there appears to be an increasing awareness of how quality design can make real and significant differences to the built environment and the lives of the users. The increasing demand for good design sends a clear and strong signal as to what will be expected of the profession as a whole.

The SIA Architectural Design Awards focuses on 6 categories represented in the exhibition:

“We are very pleased to have received over 180 submissions in this 10th cycle. It is an encouraging sign that a large number of entries came from relatively young practices. Overall, the standard of the submission was high which augurs well for the profession. Many of these winning projects will be featured in ArchiTours, one of ArchiFest’s flagship events.”

Objects: a collection of curios that generate emotions
Objects: a collection of curios that generate emotions

24 Oct - 6 Nov 2010
7am to 11pm
Bras Basah MRT Station

The theme of this year's Archifest - Happy Cities, explores how cities can be engines of happiness, examining different definition of sense of place and spaces, to challenge conventional notions of sustainable urban living. The fabric of a city can be read as a collage of experiences; a collective experience of physical forms and spaces as well as intangible senses, emotions, relationships and connectivity. The Object when given meaning starts to impact its environment and its occupants in intangible ways.

"...suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: "This is beautiful." That is Architecture. Art enters in." - Le Corbusier

OBJECTS showcases the tactile works of students from Singapore Polytechnic Design School (Diploma of Interior Design), where refreshing ways of experiencing our built environment are investigated. Through examination of materiality and texture, this exhibition shows how tectonic qualities can possibly change the way we perceive spaces, interact and ultimately how we feel.

OBJECTS features a collection of curios explored by interior design students, with techniques such as mapping, modulating and repetition, complex structures are fabricated, given purpose, meaning and even generate emotions.

Join us in our venture towards comprehending the art of urban joy. Start your experience of the happy city here by creating your own tactile work with our pencil rubbing template.

Share your tactile creations, idea of happy cities and images of this exhibition on Facebook
