A Joint National University of Singapore Department of Architecture (NUS DOA)-URA Seminar on Conservation
Historic buildings are invaluable and irreplaceable physical records and built heritage of our past. Due to the long passage of time, they are subject to the natural decay and degeneration. To conserve the historic fabric and cultural significance and put these historic gems to contemporary use is a challenging process.
It calls for historic research. A good understanding of the building’s architecture, construction and materials is essential. Employment of appropriate conservation approach and techniques is also important.
In this seminar, two practising architects will share on the thinking, responses and challenges they experienced in their efforts to restore their conservation projects. URA will also share about the outcome of their recent review of conservation guidelines for shophouses to better facilitate restoration without compromising the character.
