The inaugural ArchiFest Public (AFP) Forum is part of ArchiFest's continual effort to extend our outreach to the public, to celebrate our built environment and raise the awareness of how quality built environment, through purposeful and creative architectural and urban interventions enhance our physical and mental well being.
This year's theme of "Common Spaces" coincidentally surfaces an issue that has recently been heavily debated and discussed by the public; one that is very close to many hearts. The future of the KTM rail sites - a newly ‘found’ Common Space, not just through its physical definition, but its psychological significance, as a site that many collective identities and memories were and will be further built upon.
Objectives:
AFP Forum is not one to discuss about specific ideas for site, but it focuses on sharing ideas, ideals, possibilities and potential of the KTM rail sites. It is also to educate the public at large, the different values embedded within the sites from various perspectives of communities, interest groups and even individuals. The notion of how we can re-imagine the site is introduced through benchmarking and sharing of local and international best practices in various related fields: such as
- preservation and conservation of monuments and buildings,
- preservation of natural environment and ecosystem
- quality design precedents of adaptive reuse of such an infrastructure within the city, of creative and delightful architecture, arts and landscape design proposals worldwide.
The forum acts as a means of opening up minds and widening public's perception. It will also provide an avenue for me to publicly voice their views in a meaningful and discursive way, guided by professionals, specialists and focus groups.
Format:
Speakers from various disciplines will be engaged to provide a broad but holistic perception on the issue and to offer insights into value preposition of the respective disciplines are:
- Historical and Heritage value – Dr Lai Chee Kien (Assistant Professor, NUS)
- Environmental value – Dr Shawn Lum (President, Nature Society Singapore)
-
Architecture and Landscape opportunities
– Seah Chee Huang (Council Member and Chairman of ArchiFest Organising Committee)
– Dr Paul Barter, LKY School of Public Policy
– Mr Tobias Baur, Director of Atelier Dreiseitl - Invited Moderator – Ms Kelley Cheng (Editorial Director, SA Magazine)
Each speaker will be given 30 mins, follow by a 15 mins break, after which there will be a moderated QnA session (1 hour).
