Ma Qingyun graduated from Tsinghua University in 1988, with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering in architecture. Ma Qingyun went on to attend the Graduate School of Fine Art, Department of Architecture, University of Pennsylvania. He was the first Chinese citizen to attend the University of Pennsylvania for architecture since Liang Sicheng. He was granted a masters degree in Architecture in 1991.

During his time at the University of Pennsylvania, Ma Qingyun won second place in the Shenck-Woodman Competition, a prize for study and travel in Europe, and graduated with honors of Frank Miles Day Memorial. After accumulating extensive work experience in the US working for renowned companies such as Kohn-Pederson-Fox and Kling Lindquist, he founded MADA s.p.a.m. In 1999, MADA s.p.a.m. head office is established in Shanghai, China.

MADA s.p.a.m. is one of the most eminent design office in China also actively engaged in the architectural discourses throughout Asia, Europe and the U.S.A.. Its recognition is the result of excellence is design execution of rigor in cultural and social criticism. Apart from dedicated practices, Ma Qingyun is also involved in academic as visiting professor and lecturer at various institutions worldwide. His written work is also continuously published.
