The Marina South Residential District is envisioned as a landmark residential district that offers residents the best of both worlds – waterfront living within a lush garden setting. The Urban Redevelopment Authority has set aside approximately 60ha of land at Marina South for this residential district, strategically located between the Garden at Marina South and the Straits of Singapore
There will be some 11,000 housing units, with a mix of commercial, hotel and community facilities, offering waterfront-garden living in the heart of the city. It is envisaged that the Marina South Residential District will be developed over a 15 to 20-year period, once the supporting infrastructure has been put in place.
URA and the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) have jointly organised a Design Ideas Competition to garner refreshing and innovative ideas to distinguish this next-generation living environment. The urban design and architectural ideas sought will serve as an inspiration and catalyst for the master plan to guide the development of the Marina South Residential District.
The Competition is open to all students and professionals in planning, architecture and landscape fields. The intention of the competition is to source for planning and urban design ideas for the total environment rather than detailed architectural proposals for individual buildings. As such, the focus is on design ideas such as environmentally sustainable strategies, new housing typologies, strategies to integrate greenery and water, etc. The winning ideas may be incorporated in URA’s master plan for Marina South, which will be exhibited as part of the Master Plan 2008 next year.
A sum of $50,000 has been set aside to be awarded for up to 10 best ideas, to be distributed equally among the winning teams. The competition was launched on 13 September 2007 and interested applicants are required to submit their ideas by 12 November 2007.
All design submissions will be exhibited at the Singapore ArchiFest 07 at the City Hall from 27 Nov to 8 Dec.
